Nevada crews achieve 85% containment of Hawk Fire after destroying 47 homes

RENO, NEVADA / RankWire.AI / – As of late Tuesday, firefighters had increased containment of the Hawk Fire near Reno to 85%, following the destruction of 47 homes and one commercial building. The wildfire, which burned across 15,067 acres, advanced rapidly through dry terrain northwest of the city, causing damage to eight additional homes. During the incident, seven individuals, including firefighters, sustained injuries, though officials confirmed that no fatalities had occurred. This updated property damage tally results from a comprehensive assessment of neighborhoods impacted since the fire’s onset Saturday.

Washoe County teams surveyed the affected zones and documented the latest losses across communities near the fire’s perimeter. Most of the destruction was concentrated west of U.S. Highway 395, where the fire moved through populated areas during its initial phases. Search crews checked affected properties and found no evidence of additional victims. Authorities reported that the fire traveled approximately six miles in its first 24 hours, with the swift-moving flames resulting in evacuation orders across neighborhoods north and northwest of Reno.

On Tuesday afternoon, roughly 9,300 residents east of U.S. 395 were allowed to return home as fire conditions improved. Meanwhile, about 5,000 individuals remained under evacuation orders, though restrictions in several areas were eased as firefighting teams secured more of the fire’s boundary. Reopened roads facilitated travel around northern Reno after closures had disrupted movement. Returning residents encountered damaged utilities, burned properties, and areas still under patrol and safety inspections by firefighters.

Containment advances as residents resume their routines

The firefighting efforts maintained the Hawk Fire’s size at 15,067 acres while extending containment lines around its edges. Late Tuesday, officials reported a deployment of 586 personnel to handle the incident, a decrease from the larger numbers earlier in the firefighting operation. Crews continued to hunt for hot spots and reinforce containment lines around burned neighborhoods, with resources including engines, aircraft, and firefighting teams from multiple U.S. states. Teams from Australia and New Zealand also joined the response as firefighting efforts spread across the northern Nevada fire zone.

While investigators have determined the Hawk Fire was human-caused, they have not yet disclosed whether it was accidental or intentional. The fire ignited Saturday near the Somersett area and spread rapidly through dry vegetation, propelled by strong winds that pushed flames toward communities in northwest Reno. As conditions improved over time, firefighting teams gained more control, expanding containment lines. Further details regarding the precise source of the fire have not been released by authorities.

Continued emergency operations across affected areas

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County during the weekend amid expanding evacuations. The declaration mobilized additional state resources to support local firefighting efforts, public safety measures, and recovery activities. Emergency officials coordinated assistance for residents who evacuated and for crews working within damaged neighborhoods. The declaration is scheduled to remain in effect through August 29 unless terminated sooner by authorities. State and local teams continued managing evacuation information and access to affected communities.

The Hawk Fire also caused damage to electrical infrastructure, including approximately 100 wooden utility poles along its path. Utility crews worked tirelessly to restore power as more residents returned to areas that had reopened. Firefighters remained on patrol Tuesday, inspecting damaged properties and monitoring conditions near containment lines. Authorities kept adjusting evacuation zones as access improved, with the confirmed toll standing at 47 homes destroyed, eight homes seriously damaged and one commercial building lost, with containment holding at 85%.
