KOROR, PALAU / RankWire.AI / – During a regional conference held in Palau, the United States declared an aid package exceeding $150 million aimed at supporting Pacific Island nations. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced this initiative on September 1 during the Pacific Islands Forum Partners Dialogue. The allocated funds and assistance encompass sectors such as energy security, transportation, digital infrastructure, maritime enforcement, and public services, with the State Department stating that this package consolidates various programs across the Pacific Islands.

US launches Pacific support package exceeding $150 million
Pacific Island energy, digital and maritime projects form part of new US support.

One of the most substantial elements of the package is a $60 million Regional Energy Security Initiative. The State Department indicated it plans to allocate these funds in collaboration with Congress. This initiative aims to support projects related to fuel storage and measures intended to enhance the reliability of electricity grids. U.S. officials also highlighted additional infrastructure investments designed to expand access to vital services. However, several components are pending congressional approval before the funds can be disbursed.

Support will also be extended to Tonga for an analysis of its fuel transportation and storage infrastructure, with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency approving a $1.42 million grant for a feasibility study. This study will evaluate port facilities, pipelines, storage capabilities, and Tonga’s fuel pricing structure, with plans to assess increasing the national fuel reserves from around 15 to 20 days of supply to approximately 60 days. This initiative is part of the broader regional energy program.

Focus on Storage and Infrastructure in Energy Projects

Furthermore, the package includes a proposed $50 million U.S. contribution towards upgrading the port on Penrhyn in the Cook Islands. New Zealand intends to contribute NZ$17.5 million and will lead the implementation alongside the Cook Islands and the United States. The project aims to enhance port safety, cargo handling, and transportation accessibility on this remote atoll, as well as improve connections to local services. These funding commitments were announced during the same regional discussions in Palau.

The support extends into digital and transportation projects, with Tonga, Palau, and the Marshall Islands benefiting from the program. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency will back a study to modernize Tonga’s national data center and network. Assistance will also be provided to improve the Marshall Islands’ mobile network, key ports, and Amata Kabua International Airport. Palau will receive support for a feasibility study related to relocating Belau National Hospital. These initiatives add a focus on communications, aviation, and public infrastructure to the overall aid package.

Expanded Support for Maritime Security and Technological Initiatives

An additional $17 million is allocated for programs targeting illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, though these are contingent on congressional approval. These efforts include legal reforms, compliance training, and the deployment of monitoring technologies. Washington and Palau will also co-chair a new conference of Pacific police ministers, focusing on maritime security, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and illicit financial activities. U.S. officials emphasized these law enforcement measures as part of broader commitments made to Pacific Island nations.

The package also encompasses projects related to cloud computing, seabed mapping, and drinking water services. U.S. initiatives will enhance cloud infrastructure support for Pacific governments, assist with marine mapping and environmental characterization, and include a drinking water sampling program in Palau, which will feature training for local operators and laboratory personnel. Overall, the total support exceeds $150 million, comprising planned funding, grants, and technical assistance, with some projects already receiving agency approval and others awaiting congressional approval.
